Product Manager Saw &  Hand Tools – Reporting to Starrett Marketing Manager

Objective goals:
The Product Manager Saw & Hand Tools (PMS&HT)  is tasked to generate maximum growth, profit, and return on assigned assets (Saws, HPTA & Hand Tool)

The PMS&HT will have ultimate responsibility for managing an entire business segment process ensuring complete and on-time delivery of salable assets.

Prime Duties and Responsiblities:

  1. Develop a clear understanding of the business economics for the managed market segment. At a minimum, the successful Manager will have command of the following Company information:
  • Inventory
  • Major Cost and expense elements
  • Actions which most impact cost and profit, and how these economies compare with competitors
  • Operational costs which vary with volume
  • General operation cost which influence margin

     

  1. Compile & Chronical Competitive Market Information
  • Library competitors sales volume, product offering, market strategy
  • Define market channels and margin structure
  • Research total market potential and market trends

     

  1. Define and present Saw/HPTA/Hand Tool product and pricing for Starrett promotinal programs
  • Highlight product feature and benefit enabling Marketing to develop product catalogs,

    concepts for sell sheets and POP’s.

  • Provide product / PIM information for: www.starrett.com,ensure up-to date, accurate information
  • Attend to: regular market segment profitability analysis.

     

  1. Product Management -Pinpoint poor product performers with low gross margins and initiates actions to:
  • Raise selling price when possible
  • Suggest product changes to Market Development
  • Consider applicable resourcing of product to Strategic Purchasing
  • Discontinue product
  • Devise other possible solutions.

     

  1. Facilitate Sales Revenue- identifiy good profit performers with high margins. Initiate action to:
  • Increase selling and promotional emphasis to gain immediate, high margin market share
  • Collaberate and meet regularly with other Starrett business units to collect and share global market data, discuss new product ideas and monitor global competitive activity
  • Develop an annual Product strategy map AND a three year plan for the assigned market segment
  • Correct and complete set-up of new products in the Oracle ERP system

     

  1. Support Activity
  • Visit key distributors and end users
  • Assist the sales team in presenting the product line and programs
  • Work with sales to select products for trade shows
  • Ensure promotional materials are in place and show personnel are trained on features and benefits of new products.
  • Provide monthly demand planning data for top products. Anaylysis to consider promotional activities, large new opportunities, new product and business lost.
  • Develop training material for employees, representatives and distributors.


Required Relationships
:

The Product Manager must work closely with the following departments to achieve desired results.

Sales
: To implement specific sales programs, ensure emphasis on assigned products and to obtain continuous, meaningful feedback from the marketplace. The PMS&HT, is to work with Regional Managers, Territory Managers and Product Specialist to evaluate target accounts and achieve market penetration in specific channels.

Production
: Provide sales forecasts and regular inventory reviews so as to effectively manage, product availability and product cost.

Product Development
: Provide market input and set priorities for new products. Provide ideas to facilitate product enhancement and cost/margin improvement.

Finance: Understand and manage business economics to obtain current, meaningful reports of cost structure and profitability on asset segments. Monitor results achieved on new product development

Marketing
: Develop specific promotional plans for the upcoming business year. Determine the budget dollars, define clearly the objectives of such a plan and note the expected return. Monitor results and when necessary, take quick action to cancel promotional efforts, if results are not achieved.

Purchasing
: Monitor inventory levels for assigned products ensuring adequate turns and service levels. Provide demand planning input for key products.

The selected candidate will have a four year college degree in business, marketing or related discipline and will have a minimum of five years’ experience in the Industrial, Construction channels of North America.

Starrett Company is seeking an experienced Territory Manager.  The “right” territory sales professional will possess proven experience in territory management and new business development.  Successful team members will be required to optimize and mine sales through industrial distributor channel partners and prospect, qualify, and develop new end-user customers in the automotive, electronics, aerospace, energy, construction, food packaging, medical, metal working, and manufacturing industries in a fast-growing marketplace. The role requires a self-directed, results-oriented sales professional with technical aptitude, strong consultative sales skills and experience and ability to qualify customer needs, develop new sales opportunities, and optimize existing distribution accounts to increase product market share and new product sales. Interest and experience in territory management, new business development, and customer retention are primary factors of success.  (50% travel / limited overnights required.)

  • 65% New Business Development – End-User & Distributor – Present, demonstrate, and sell The L.S. Starrett Company products and solutions to end-user customers and distributor channel partners. Work independently or jointly with distributor sales team to develop end-user customers through product testing, product application, and consultation. Requires proven skills in prospecting, qualifying, demonstrating and influencing diverse decision makers to accurately target and develop new business opportunities.

     

  • 35% Account Management & Development – End-User & Distributor Manage, develop, and grow sales by supporting distributor / channel partner accounts through joint calls, sales training, product training, technical support, problem resolution, and product recommendations.

Top performers will possess a minimum of 6-8 years of proven sales experience working independently from a home office / virtual environment in a territory management, consultative-based sales role with experience in a manufacturing or distributor-focused sales environment. Success requires expertise in new business development, qualifying, developing and securing new customer accounts through distribution and/or direct end-user channels.


Additional Experience


Prior experience in the manufacturing / industrial segment or industry-related experience in product application is a plus, although sales experience and success in developing customers in a multi-channel sales scenario is required.

This position includes design, coding and unit testing of the new code. The candidate must have good communications skills and want to work in a team-oriented, development organization. This is not a customer support position, but rather is a core development position. Candidate will work closely with Hardware engineering on a daily basis.

Requirements:

  • BS degree in related field of study
  • Excellent C, C++ and or C# programming skills
  • Strong development experience in mobile app development. Qt, Java, J2ME, Android, iOS
  • Strong skills debugging assembly code
  • 4 + years software design experience (not maintenance or support experience)

Skills:

Candidate must have SW Engineering discipline (e.g., requirements, design, reviews, testing) and be willing to take on different roles (e.g., develop validation tests, fix bugs, develop new functionality). Programming skills should include C, C++ or C# development. Experience and exposure to TI and PIC controllers is a major plus. Proven experience debugging code using source-level debuggers and logic/bus analyzers for embedded systems is desired.

Responsibilities:

  • Design core electronic products for Starrett Tools.  Provide conceptual design of complex Electronic and Electro-mechanical products, assemblies and components.
  • Participate in product development teams; interface with Manufacturing Engineer, Production, Manufacturing, Vendors, Subcontractors and Customers on issues related to redesign , manufacture, use of products.

  • Take direction from Senior engineers and R&D Director

  • Test and analyze prototype units and mockups

  • Document work; and direct and check work of Engineers, draftsmen and designers as required ensuring accuracy and compliance with company and national standards.  Also insure that quality goals and objectives are met.

  • Participate in or lead the creation of Engineering Specifications, cost, manpower, capital, and expense estimates, along with task lists, milestones and schedules related to the development of new products

  • The ability to be very flexible. Works on project development, new product, redesign, corrective actions ie: cost reductions, service and support old products.  Assume additional roles and responsibilities as required

  • Secondary role: Tech support of Wireless and wired Data Collection production, which includes phone support with customers and potential on site visits for installations and training of new users.

Qualifications:

  • Must have practice in design of Digital and Analog Circuits and specifications of electronic and electro-mechanical components
  • Must have some exposure to PCB layout and Schematic Capture (Altium_Protel experience is preferred).  Skilled in the use of ECAD tools for developing layout.
  • Must have experience in one or more of the following tools and methods; Design of Experiments, Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Must have a strong work ethic, and capability to work without constant oversight
  • Must have a basic understanding of electro-mechanical design (DFMA)
  • Skilled in writing microprocessor based firmware in Assembly and Higher level code (preferred)

Responsible for leading the development and documentation of advanced concepts and designs of complex electronic and electro-mechanical products requiring Analog and Digital Design Skills.

In addition, responsible for the construction, test and evaluation of prototype units.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Provide conceptual design of complex Electronic and Electro-mechanical products, assemblies and components. Complete tasks according to schedule, budget, costs and design objectives. Monitor and report work progress.
  2. Design and develop firmware, software in support of electronic circuits and test fixtures.
  3.  Direct the efforts and provide technical guidance for Engineers, Designer, Drafter, Technician and Toolmakers assigned to the project. Coordinate work with Engineers and others to ensure project goals and objectives are met.
  4. Direct the manufacture, test and analysis of prototype units and mockups.
  5. Document work by preparing Schematics, PCB layouts, drawings, Bills of Materials, ECN's and Engineering Release packages. Select and specify tolerances, materials and processes for designs as required. Direct and check the work of draftsmen and technicians as required to ensure accuracy and compliance with Product Requirement Specification and applicable standards. Ensure that quality goals and objectives are met.
  6. Participate in or lead the creation of Engineering Specifications, cost, manpower, capital, and expense estimates, along with task lists, milestones and schedules related to the development of new products.
  7. Participate in or lead product development teams and interface with Manufacturing Engineer, Production, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Vendors, Subcontractors and Customers on issues related to design, manufacture, use of parts or products.
  8. Provide input to maintain documentation, standards and guidelines such as; revision control, libraries, common components, layer lists, database management, etc.
  9. Maintain technical proficiency in design and ECAD skills.
  10. Maintain awareness of competitive products and developments.
  11. Maintain optimum working conditions and housekeeping. Comply with safety rules and regulations.
  12. Assume additional roles and responsibilities as required.

Requirements

  1. Education:  BSEE required, MS preferred;   (BSEE acceptable with courses such as Digital and Analog Design and the equivalent of 8 years experience in the design of Instruments, production applications and manufacturing techniques to attain sufficient engineering background. )
  2. Skills / Technical Knowledge / Experience:  Minimum 5 years experience in design and documentation of Instruments with Digital and Analog Circuits and specification of electronic and electro-mechanical components.  Experience in compact, very low power (1.5-3VDC) circuit design. 
    • Must be fluent in written and spoken English
    • Demonstrated skill in the conceptual design and layout of Instruments.  Skill in the design and documentation of schematics, PCB Layout, Component Selection, Cables, Wire harnesses etc.
    • Demonstrated skill in microprocessor based firmware and software development.  Must know assembly language, compiliers, installers, optimization. Preferred platforms PIC and TI MSP 430 chips and C language.
    • Skilled in the use of ECAD tools for developing schematics and PCB layout (Altium Protel).
    • Skilled in the use of spreadsheet and word processing tools.
    • Capable of effectively leading product development teams.   Skill in the use of project scheduling tools preferred.
    • Experience with one or more of the following tools and methods; Design of Experiments, Design For Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA)
    • Basic understanding of electro-mechanical design is required.
  3. Supervision required: Works under general direction, independently determines and develops approach to solutions.  Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and overall adequacy and accuracy.
