DataSure at the Desktop – Six Questions & Answers about Wireless Data Collection Manager Software |
All DataSure® systems include the Wireless Data Collection Manager software package at no extra charge. This software runs within the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser to connect and manage your tools, network, data and third party SPC applications.
In the Winter 2007 edition of Last Word, we had an overview of DataSure Wireless Data Collection structured as a series of questions and answers -- "DataSure Wireless Data Collection -- Five Questions & Answers." In this issue, we follow the same format but focus specifically on the Wireless Data Collection Manager software package. |
1) What are the basic facts about DataSure Wireless Data Collection Manager? • It monitors your wireless network, tools, system status, end node battery voltages and tool measurements, all from one screen • Measurements can be initiated and viewed directly from the home page • Data can be exported in many formats including: TSV, CSV, XML and XLS • Data is stored on a local or network SQL database with programmable, scheduled backup • Remote personnel can configure tools, export data and monitor activity via intranet without additional software • Virtual multiplexers allow data to be directed from specific tools to multiple software applications • End nodes, multiplexers and applications can be personalized with a descriptive name • System Requirements: Windows® XP Professional Service Pack 2 (uses IIS and .NET framework components)
2) Can I use the DataSure software as a SPC analysis tool? DataSure does not perform SPC analysis per se, but with two or three mouse clicks, it does store and export in formats that can be used for record keeping and analysis.
The exported files will open using common office software, such as word processors and spreadsheets in the vast majority of cases. |

In addition, DataSure streams data to COM ports of the host PC. Your SPC software can receive the data via its specific input settings.
Of course if your SPC needs are more elaborate than simply recording and graphing trend lines, we recommend that you invest in software designed specifically for SPC and analysis. Starrett Gage Link Software is bundled with DataSure for simple SPC recording and analysis.
3) If I don't want to use specialized SPC software, can I simply use Microsoft Excel® to record and graph data? Yes. The software supports CSV, TSV and .XLS formats that can be opened directly in Excel.
4) Can I graph data with DataSure software? Yes and no. No, if you use no other SPC software or spreadsheet application. Yes, if you have MS Excel or other SPC analysis software on the host machine.
DataSure sends data via COM port to applications, or flat files with formats including CSV and TSV, XLS and XML.
5) If I have 20 or more tools on the shop floor, can I view data collected from just one tool? Measurement data can be sorted and exported directly from the DataSure software, regardless of the SPC software used for everyday analysis. Data can be sorted by multiplexer (a collection of tools), tool (a single tool), radio end node, and/or day and time the measurements took place.
6) Does DataSure software allow the operator to annotate data? No. However, most SPC software packages do support annotating measurements, i.e. assignable cause or comments/notes functions.
