 | New Band Saw Line Introduced MOUNT AIRY, NORTH CAROLINA (February 2, 2009) — The L.S. Starrett Company Saw Division has formally launched an upgraded band saw blade product line. The line incorporates distinctive new features and products designed to provide end user productivity advantages.
“After a comprehensive review of our Global band saw activities and analysis of competitive and market trends, we decided that the time was right to invest. The result was a progression of innovative and exclusive new technologies, state-of-the-art new saw manufacturing facilities, sophisticated new products and enhancement of both the size and expertise of the Starrett Saw team,” according to Greg Cook, Business Director for Saw Products. “These changes were so significant that we are also reorganizing and renaming our product line,” continued Cook.
While best known for its precision measuring tools, The L.S. Starrett Company is hardly a newcomer to saw products. As early as 1888, company founder, Laroy S. Starrett became interested in blade manufacturing, but characteristically, he found existing products of the day not up to his standards. In his own words, “We abandoned traditional processes, tempering and hardening devices of our own devising, and built special automatic cutting-up and teeth-setting machines and applied exhaustive tests to learn the best quality of steel needed for hacksaw blades. We got it…”
Following in this proud tradition, we invested time and money into improving the status quo, and once again, “we got it,” remarked Cook.
“While others are scaling back R&D and falling back on reputation and mature products, we are committed to introducing a steady stream of innovative products and processes. These include our patented Bi-Metal Unique® saw technology with its exclusive solid state diffusion bonding and 170% more weld contact area; and our new Versatix™ band saw blade with a ground-breaking tooth profile,” said Cook.
Noteworthy new products in the Starrett band saw blade line up include:Versatix™ MP Developed specifically for cutting structural steels, sections, tubes and small solids, the new Versatix™ MP bi-metal blade has an innovative, patent-pending tooth design that easily copes with the shock loading conditions associated with intermittent cutting. This blade is also ideal for manual “pull down” band saw machines where there is inevitable variation in the feed rate.
Advanz™ FS & Advanz™ TS Carbide Tipped Blades Built in new state-of-the-art manufacturing cells, Advanz carbide-tipped blades have a triple-chip carbide tooth selected for its toughness, shock and wear resistance. They are manufactured with improved tooth blasting to help with break-in and increase blade life. In addition, its pitch selection has been revised to better align with today’s application requirements.
The Advanz FS replaces the previous carbide-tipped Type I blade. It is ideal for use as a foundry saw, cutting aluminum castings, masonite, plastics, composites and abrasive wood. Replacing the carbide tipped Type III blade, the Advanz TS blade was developed specifically for cutting high alloy metals and difficult-to-machine steels.
Wide Band Starrett’s new manufacturing procedures improve blast peening and heat treating for better new fatigue life, consistently straighter blades, and consequently, better welds. As a result, Starrett’s wide band bi-metal and carbide tipped blades provide large machine facilities with a new, high-quality option.
Other Products In addition to the new Versatix and Advanz product families, other major product groups are the Intenss™ family of bi-metal blades and Duratec™ carbon steel blades.
