Volume 3, No. 4

Large diameter and deep-throated gages are heavy and hard to handle. As the work piece size increases, the size and weight of the gage makes it increasingly difficult to assure acceptable accuracy, resolution and repeatability.

The Starrett Special Gage Division has often received requests to make a gage to measure large and/or uniquely shaped parts. To meet these requirements, our engineers investigated the properties of honeycomb.

As a result, we developed expertise in the use of lightweight yet rigid honeycomb aluminum for large frames. Since then, we have applied this technology to many applications, providing reliable and repeatable close tolerance measurement of large parts.

Ultra-Light Deep Throat Gage
The deep throat indicating gage (above, right) is a product we developed to determine that a specific point of a fan rotor shaft nearly 15” from its edge, was .281” thick to a tolerance of ±.005”.

Ultra-Light Large Diameter Gage
We developed a family of 6" range indicating snap gages (below, left) available with ranges from 18-24” to 84-90” (457-610mm through 2134-2286mm). The indicator is set to zero with a set master and the size variation is read at the indicator.

Indicating snap gages are available with either dial or electronic indicators. Many of these gages having electronic indicators with output are configured with End Nodes for use with a DataSure Wireless Data Collection System.

We continue to develop new applications with honeycomb aluminum-based designs. They are available for measuring outside diameters to 72” (180 cm) and beyond (right), inside dimensions to 110" (280mm) and throat depths to 40” (100 cm).

If you need a large custom gage or have any requirement to measure something out of the ordinary, the Starrett Special Gage Division has the expertise to help you find a solution.
